Minimum 1GB, 2GB would be ample.

Ram and memory are the same thing, and alot is 16 Gigs, but in reality for a home computer, 2 or 3 is more then enough. Anything over that on Windows or Vista Normal install is a waste. They will only recognise 3.25 Gigs even if you have 4 8 or 16 or whatever.
Of course, if you get a 64 Bit OS version, they will pick up more then 4, but you will probably have various compatability issues.

If you're not a gamer that 1 GB is the most you'll need on XP. If you're using Vista you could have 2GB. If you play games than you could add 2 GB to each of those.

For what you want the ram you should get is:
Vista : 2 Gb
Xp : 1 Gb
A lot of ram would be like 8Gb, the 6Gb of ram would never be used so it would be a waste.

I would consider 16gb of ram a lot. But for your needs 1gb at least. 2gb to make it rocket along.

Hey i've got 8GB now and Vistax64 uses it all. I got it really cheap ($125 after all the rebates). But 2GB is plenty for non gaming
