I really enjoyed Beowulf all the times I read it in school. The movie though, I thought was horrible. Not only did it not follow the original story in many, many ways, but the dialog was very silly in many places, the ways they changed the story were unnecessary, and I did not like the style on animation they used, even though it was in 3D. As for differences, let's see. . .
I don't remember Beowulf fighting naked all the time, and could really see no reason why he had to be naked to often in the film. Hrothgar does not kill himself, Beowulf does not have a glow in the dark mead horn, Grendel's mother is supposed to come and take Grendel's arm back, which she doesn't. She is also supposed to live at the bottm of a lake or other body of water and Beowulf is the only one who can hold his breath long enough to reach it and fight her. Instead she lives in a cave. And, most important of all, Grendel's mother is supposed to die! Why she doesn't in the movie I have no idea. After Beowulf kills Grendel and his mother, he is supposed to go back home and, as I recall, eventually become king of the Geats, not stay and become king of the Danes. But again, Hrothgar is not supposed to kill himself either. The dragon is definitely not supposed to be the demon spawn of Beowulf and Grendel's mother either. As I recall, they find it in a cave with a hoard of treasure. I can't remember why they go fight it, but Beowulf is killed in the fight, which as I remember occurs entirely in the dragon's cave. I found it completely ridiculous in the movie as well, that when Beowulf punched Grendel he shrunk. Not really sure what that was about. Or the weird blue fire. I thought it was a terrible adaptation and a horrible movie. It did make my friend and I laugh out loud at it's ridiculousness though. Alas.

it's an "epic poem" which means its not like poems you find nowadays, its a poem all right but its really long and meant to tell an entire story. the novel was invented in japan some centuries after beowulf i believe, and din't come to the West until some years later. beowulf is deifnitely not a novel

the only thing that was pretty much the same was the time period. I liked the movie a bit because it was in 3D and the poem was tooo boring
