depending on the weather I have a few coast that I wear year in year out. first is my black wool peacoat I bought at eddie bauer ages ago. fairly warm, especially when layered up with sweater and scarf.
second for more dress option is the long wool/cashmere car coat. I have two. camel knee length from lands end and a full length just above my ankles black one. I wear the camel one more since it never goes below the 20s in my area.
then because it rains horrendously in the winter in the northern part of san francisco, I have my trusty trench coat.
I think the peacoat or the wool car coat are the most versatile. dress up or down and super warm.

there are a lot of different styles to choose from:
puffy-cute and warm
pea coat-for not as cold days, and cuter than the puffy
heavy sweatshirt-for warmer winter days
vest-something cute to dress yourself up for winter
windbreaker-for rain!
I recommend a puffy coat and then also get a vest or a pea coat to switch off for a cuter newer look!

trench coat.
i invested in a beautiful black, buttoned trench coat last winter and boy it was good. it matches everything because its a nutural colour and look georgous.
