Yes, people have called me ma'am before and I didn't care for it. I realized that was silly afterward, because I'm actually old enough to qualify for ma'am. Also, I'm in a customer service related business, so we have to call a lot of people by either sir or ma'am everyday. I'd say it's acceptable to call anyone over like 25 ma'am, though I usually use miss myself, to avoid implying she's older than she really might be. I notice too, if a girl is younger than that but has for instance babies in strollers with her etc, we tend to say ma'am. Another example is if they are younger but dressed very businesslike we tend to say ma'am. So I think it can also imply life experience, not just age. It's actually a form of respect. With guys I call them all sir, unless they are like 14...what else would you say?

This relationship doesn't sound to great, the cons which I might add are really big and are a lot more then the good. I can't seeing this going well in the long run. I think you can find a much better guy, who is be nicer and treat you like you deserve. So my advice is to get out of it as soon as you can.

I myself work in the customer service industry, so I have gotten quite used to being called ma'am. At first I felt like "hey Im not old enough to be a ma'am," but then I realized that it is a pure sign of respect and manners and now I graciously accept it. =)

I'm in the military so I'm used to it. I'm 41 so I love to call the young troops sir or ma'am cause they get frustrated that it makes them feel old, but I am older than them so there is nothing they can do about it.

i live in the south-- everyone is "ma'am" and "sir" but i wasn't born here.. i grew up in Nebraska. my mom always told my friends not to call her ma'am because it makes her feel old. i agree. maybe i don't have those "southern manners", but i never want to be called ma'am and i won't call someone else it

yeah but i hate it! i mean, im just a teen and when business people or people at restaurants (like waiters and stuff) call me ma'am to be polite, i feel kind of uncomfortable, but i appreciate that they are being polite.
