We have great medical technology, but the average person doesn't have access to it.

So why come here?

Canadians cannot always wait until their name gets to the top of the waiting list. If we have to pay for care, and can afford it, the United States has a better reputation for success.
Sorry, but it is true. For the rest of us who cannot afford private, we are in the same boat as you.

The people who come here tend to fall into one of two categories:

They've got a serious problem and they're being treated for FREE by us--such as some of the "Siamese twins" now "conjoined twins" cases that make the international news. Frankly, most countries CAN NOT perform the surgery and the PR for the facility, etc. is seen as worthwhile and/or someone is so moved by the plight of the people that they use their clout to get it done.

Also unbeknownst to the majority of the public, the US Border Patrol is INSTRUCTED to let the seriously ill in under "compassionate entry" theory. We eat the cost of that care, of course. In fact, at times, it causes portions of our hospitals to shut down for lack of funds.

The next category is those who either have the money themselves or their government will pick up the tab for their care. This used to be common for Canadians in particular, but as they're running out of funds for this, that's a bill they're not so willing to pay anymore.

If you want top-notch care, the US is the place to get it. The question is: who will pay?

The people who come here aren't average--they're either covered by their funds, their government, the PR or humanitarian value, or they're sticking the US taxpayer with the bill.

The ones that come here either have plenty of money or their care is donated by a doctor and a hospital. Some come because their communities raised money to send here. They come with major medical problems that can be handled better here than anywhere else.

The US has the most advanced medical treatment facilities and equipment in the world. In countries where there is socialized medicine or in many other countries these procedures are not available or are not available in a timely fashion.

For those people who have the resources the US is an ideal place to get what they want when they want it.
