I've always used the 1 to 3 rule.
If you see one mouse, theres three you don't see.
Set traps acccordingly.

What a load of baloney.
There is no hard and fast rule.
If a house is infested and the owner tells me that they trapped six overnight then the chances are that there may well be at least another thirty or so. I will only however say this once I have made notes of the evidence - droppings, urine tracks, smaers, and general smell.
If the householder saw one run in the back door and hit it over the head with a mallet then the chances are that the job is done, though I would still check and leave a non toxic monitor for peace of mind.
Scare mongers are everywhere in the pest industry so beware.

I believe it's more like for the one you saw, there might be 7 more.......... I believe 20 and 50 sound like a bit much. We use peanut butter on traps instead of cheese as we have 'field mice' that are teeny tiny and harder to catch. (we live in the country) Definitely seal up anything tha tyou can by whatever means necessary. Keep food covered, keep trash taken out. Eliminate food sources. We seal up spaces depending on location in many different ways. If it's a big space steel wool and then something over the top of that like a pie tin, nailed down, too easy to just push steel wool outof the way. We have also use expandable foam, although its not fool proof, we have had them chew through that. I have even used my hot glue gun. Places to look for entrances would be anywhere plumbing enters or leaves your house, that's a biggie most of the time. Always keep doors shut tightly, even in adjacent areas. I am a picky bee-otch about our garage doors, etc. But I think it helps, because if I can keep them out of there, they don't seem to migrate in.
Alot of people will tell yo to use bait, I am not as big of fan of that, because you might not have mice running around, b ut you have to smell them decomposing and you generally can't find the carcass.
Can you tell that I HATE mice with a passion. Bless your heart, sorry you're having to deal with them.

Actually, my exterminator said that for every mouse you see there are 20 that you cannot. And, a mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime, so seal anything that size and larger.

Definitely. Probably quite a few more. Start tackling the problem right away. They breed like crazy.

you can get sonic rodent repellers at canadian tire, and probably home depot - they plug into electrical outlet and make a highpitched noise only the rodents can hear, they don't like it and move to the neighbours house - and no little corpses lying around

The rule of thumb is that if you can see one there are 50 more you are not seeing.

Usually there is, but the other important question is: where are they coming from? Tyr and find the source and eliminate it and other potential sites.
