Before I go ahead and make the mistake of buying some obscure product that happens to have "wireless" and "PC Card" in it's title, I wanted to check in here.

I've got a cable modem and a router already hooked up in my house. I've got the adapter installed on my desktop, I get internet, everything is peachy.

I've also got a second-hand laptop that doesn't have a wireless card installed thus making it sort of useless. I'd like to be able to, like a normal person, take my laptop wherever I want (including in my home) and use the internet (wherever a WiFi connection is available). I don't want to do one of those "Sign up and get internet for 2 years" deals -- just a card to plug into my laptop and search for existing wireless networks in the area and hop on the internet.

So, what am I looking for exactly? Can anyone link me to a relatively inexpensive example of the product I'm in the market for?

You might want to go to CNET.com and get editor's ratings on wireless adapters for your laptop. If you just want one that will do the job for cheap, check the link below. I have one like it and it works fine.

I checked CNET, and they said this is the best all-around wireless adapter they have seen. See links below.

Buy a router for your desktop, if it'll support one such as linksys, then get a usb network adapter for your laptop. Run the cable modem ethernet cable to the router(after setting up the software, follow instructions included), then from the router to your desktop, you can broadcast the wireless from the router to your laptop after you install an adapter.

Hope that helped

What you need is a PCMCIA wireless network card. This will slide into a vacant PCMCIA slot on the side of the laptop. Install the drivers and software and you are set to go.

You just need to make sure that your laptop has a wireless card. Then, if you find a place that has a WIFI spot, you're ready to go. Good luck.
