I start my period on Dec. 26th so if I am pregnant it is very early, at least less than a month. Is it alright to drink until I get a positive home preg. test? It's most likely I'm not and it's the holiday season. I will abstain if I have to but I'd like some responses. If anyone knows of a source that explains this I would love the link!

➔ Trying to Conceive
At this point, I'm not trying to conceive. I've had a couple symptoms that could either be a reaction to birth control (though I've been on the same one for over two years) or something strange. Of course if I was trying to conceive I would make the conscious choice to abstain, and I have ever since my breasts became sore. However, b/c it is very unlikely, and I'm not trying, I was hoping I could still enjoy a little over Christmas. I feel as passionately as everyone else about drinking during pregnancy. Once I found out I would stop altogether. I only have one glass of wine with a meal anyway. Thank you for all of the responses!

When you're trying to conceive you should behave like your pregnant. So no, it's not safe to drink. Early in pregnancy is when everything is being formed, so it's actually the LEAST safe time to be exposed to any tetrogens, including alcohol.

I might say no. I don't believe any OB in terms of matters like this. I had an OB inform me to move on a no carb nutrition. I achieve plenty of weight for the period of being pregnant it doesn't matter what I do. He advised me to move on Atkins. Well, going right into a state of ketosis can kill the fetus. Nice recommendation from an OB dontcha feel? Now they are telling mother's to not devour lunch meat and tender cheeses. Why might that be incorrect however wine k? Does that make experience? I believe the man or woman who mentioned you must recall that what you are putting in place your procedure is going straight on your little one. Would you provide your toddler or infant a pitcher of wine? Then why might you drink it at the same time pregnant?

There are many conflicting opinions on this on different boards. Most all medical professionals that I have talked to about it will say that it has no effect on the unborn child until the placenta begins to take over the pregnancy. At that point the baby begins to feed off of what you eat and drink. I think you will be absolutely fine if you have a little wine up to the point of when you get your positive prgnancy test. I would obviously not suggest drinking anymore once you get your positive, though. But go ahead and enjoy your Holiday! If you are lucky enough to have conceived this month, than rest esay knowing that your baby is safe and sound in there! :)

No, if you are trying to conceive then you don't need to drink smoke or anything like that! The first weeks of pregnancy are the most crutial so that is why it is recommended not to drink or smoke or take any kind of medicine or anything like that! I have even started taking regular tylenol instead extra strength just in case I were to get pregnant! When you are trying, you need to act just as you would if you knew you were pregnant.
Good Luck and baby dust!!!!

When I became pregnant with my daughter {now 5 years old} it was neither planned nor prevented. So as soon as I found out, I gave up hard liquor with no problems. However, on my OB's approval, I did enjoy a single glass of white or red wine up to 3 times a week. He told me that it would help me to relax, and lower my blood pressure {as I was over 35, blood pressure issues are a big concern.}
When you think about all the chemicals that you are exposed to in the processed foods you eat, and the very air you are breathing, I would consider organic foods and an air purifier before eliminating a simple glass of wine. {I strongly urge you to abstain from hard liquor.}
EDIT: This is a question for your OB/GYN. Obviously your concerns should be answered with her. I wonder if you already know what she'll say and your asking your question here hoping for an answer that agrees with what you want to do. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is no joke. Just because my Doctors approval made it an option for me obviously doesn't make it right for every one.

I agree that one or two glasses would be fine. My best friend drank a single bottle of beer two or three times a week while pregnant, and her child is completely normal and one of the smartest kids in her class. And not for nothing, but lots of other friends and relatives have had "surprise" pregnancies, where they weren't trying, and some of them got drunk, not knowing they were pregnant, and all of their kids are normal and healthy. I think people freak out too much on this subject.

Actually, most docs say a glass of red wine is just fine, even during pregnancy. It is actually recommended as a first step to stop premature labor. There was a study recently (and I can't find the link just now) that actually found that you can lower risk of miscarriage by having a glass of wine 2-3 times a week.
As other posters say, if you can't stop at just one glass, then skip it all together. Talk to your doctor though.

If you even are TTC it is not recommended that you drink because if there is a remote chance of pregnancy there NO safe amount of alcohol. Don't just take it from us though, consult the professional resources. Read this for more info: http://www.storknet.com/experts/nutrition/cd10.htm

I'm relatively certain that glass of wine is healthy pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy. Wine is good for your health.
Getting drunk would be bad for the baby, but one glass would be perfectly fine.
However if you're really uncertain then ask your doctor.

You should quit drinking as soon as you try to become pregnant. My doctor told me to live as though I was pregnant when trying to conceive, no drinking, and take prenatal vitamins.
