First- his writing was new. People weren't really looking at the macabre, and when he came out with the idea that Gothic/Dark Lit could be good lit people flocked to it
Second- The mystery surrounding his death. He was nowhere near as popular as Longfellow was, and they were contempories. This mystery propelled him past being forgotten like Holmes, and Whittier
Third- People read him. It doesn't matter how good a text is; if people don't read it it gets lost.

Edgar Allan Poe was one of America's first poets and novelists who in a short life time (40 years ) gained notoriety as an author, poet and strange character. Much of this is displayed in his works which were read by the learned of that era.

Many things. He was one of the foremost authors in the American Romanticism movement. He was also the father of the modern detective novel and creator of the so called "locked room scenario" in Murders on the Rue Morgue. He was a genius.
