Typically?
In North America it would probably be six as both an average and typical number.
This is because, while domestic cars vary 4-6-8 cylinders, most mid size cars come with six as standard and then have a high-performance 6 as an option. V8 is optional on a few but is standard on very few models.
Smaller trucks have4 available, but most are sold with 6.
Most vans are sold with 6.
Most smaller cars, both domestic and imported, come with 4, but some have 6 as an option, and many buyers choose the optional larger engine.
Some Japanese and Korean mid-size may offer 4, but almost all are sold with 6, and their luxury models are almost entirely 6 , with only a few V8s.
Germany sends 6 cylinders on most of their cars sold in USA or Canada.
Britain sends a mix, with Mini's all 4, but most Jaguars are 6.

In the Uk its abit different, as fuel prices here are sky high. The general is 4 cylinder both petrol and diesel. 3 cylinders here are also pretty popular with Smart for two's, Vauxhall Corsa's (GM), Toyota Yaris etc. I personally drive a 5 cylinder Volvo, 5 cylinders are becoming more popular from both germany and sweden. It would then be a larger car by British standards that would have more. The Volkswagon Passat has an unusual one which our police force uses, its the W8 which is basically two V4's bolted together. So in UK terms.
3- Pretty popular
4- Most popular
V4- Extreamly rare
5- Pretty popular
V5- Rare and usually only seen in VWs
6- Rare and usually only seen in older executive models
V6- Pretty popular but thirsty here so usually only owned by the richer driver.
V8- Not rare but not popular either, usually seen in 4x4's
V10- Extreamly rare
V12- only ever seen one and it was in a Damlier Soverign
There is a larger one I think its W12 by volkswagon and a W16 which is fitted to the Buggatti Veyron
Hope this helps from this end of the world

There are currently automobiles in production with 2 to 16 cylinders. As mentioned, the typical is around 6 in the USA. In much of the rest of the world, typical is 4 cylinders.
A correction to one respondent: All Jaguars currently sold in the USA come with V8 engines, though in other markets, some of the same models are offered with V6 gasoline and diesel engines.
Most vehicles that are offered with a four cylinder engine today, sell with a four cylinder, something on the order of 75% choose the 4 over the V6. Cost (initial and life cycle) being the deciding factor. Ditto on V6/V8 choices.

It depends, but often they are either 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. However, the engines could have from 1 to 36 cylinders.

6 would be "typical" but of course 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are in play.

Its called an internal combustion engine because the combustion of the fuel takes place inside the engine and the energy from the expansion of the gasses cause the power conversion via the crank. A good example of an external combustion engine is a steam train engine, heat from the combustion of coal is used to convert cold water into steam. The steam is then used to power the pistons that turn the crank.

That`s pretty broad, let`s see we could start with the 3 cylinder ' smart car ' then go 4 - 5 - 6 & v6 - v8 - v10 - v12. Gas or diesel? or alternate fuel? There are to many variables to pick just 1
