most of the time air filters a clogged with oily residue. Gas is a very good solvent for this type of residue. very effective cleaner and obviously it is compatible with the engine.
It will not hurt your hands.. unless your smoking while cleaning.
It just stinks alot. About soap and water... thats probably fine also. Its not as effective a solvent as gas but will probably do the job. make sure you dry the filter well so any left over water doesn't get in where is is not supposed to be.

The reason they suggest using gasoline to clean the filters is that the 2-cycle engines often get a lot of oil on the filter elements which causes dirt, sawdust etc to stick (this is because of the oil mixed with the gas). The gas is a good solvent for the oil and is usually on hand. Yes, your hands will stink for a while, just get the job done as fast as possible and wash your hands with scouring powder or Gojo right afterwards.

It has been proven that if you put air in your tires and change air filters every 30,000 miles you will get 100 miles to the gallon, even in an s u v. In a Volkswagen the mileage could be as much as 1100 miles per gallon. So abammo was right. I'm going to vote for him. If you buy a watermelon from 7-11, you will never have to buy gas again, or mow your lawn.

I would not recommend cleaning an air filter at all! They are designed as "One Use Only" paper and/or foam elements. As such are not designed to be cleaned. They are very affordable, and available at many outlets.

You could always wear disposable nitrile glove. Most solvents problably aren't totally good for you if you use them a lot.
