The numbers on a raffle ticket have three digits. The first digit cannot be zero.

a) What is the probability of ticket number 917 winning the grand prize?

b) What is the probability of a ticket with the numeral 3 as the second digit winning the grand prize? The first digit can still not be zero.

a 1 in 900, which is to say 1/900
b 10 in 900, which is to say 1/90

Why are there 900 possibilities? Well, think (10-1)x10x10, since one of the 10 possibilities for the first digit got ruled out.
