Actually the civil rights movement began when blacks were freed from slavery in 1863 and started growing steam in the early 1900's. That goes much farther back than the anti-apartheid movement. I believe the largest difference were sheer numbers with over 30 million blacks at the time to less than 7 million whites. They were the clear majority in South Africa!
