I know it destroyed relations between the US and the Soviet Union, but why?

Because Nikita Khruschev wanted to wreck relations between the two countries. At that time, Eisenhower was president. Both countries knew that the U.S. was flying U-2 planes over the USSR for years. They flew so high that the USSR couldn't do any thing about them. But at one moment, Gary Powers flew his U-2 so low that a Soviet missile could hit it and bring it down. Gary Powers ejected and was captured. Khruschev announced that he would no longer deal with the U.S. until Eisenhower was out of office. Khruschev apparently found Eisenhower so tough to deal with that he wanted to wait until a new president came in. The next president was Kennedy.

Okay don't focus on the turning points of history, try to focus on the problems that caused the conflicts. A lot of times it's hard to do so start with what makes the two different IE geographical location.
