I get up-dates from Microsoft about every othe day or so. Do I really need all those up-dates??? Or are they just digging into my computer? Thanks

Updates do not come from Microsoft every other day. When you installed your Microsoft platform, you usually have about 88 patches that you must install. After you have installed these critical updates, Microsoft, only releases updates every second Tuesday of each month.

Very strange, are you sure they are coming from Microsoft??

You can go to start, open, Windows Updates, after the page loads run a scan, (not the custom scan), and see if you have critical updates that have not been installed.

If you do, install them. If nothing is shown, then you have a real serious problem. As these updates are coming from some other person other then Microsoft.

The notifications you get are supposed to be for critical updates, and normally you'd want them all. Unfortunately, Microsoft's definition of a critical update might not be the same as your definition. I believe IE7 was considered a critical update, which of course is hardly critical.

At any rate, I never let Windows download or update anything automatically. I get the notification and check to see what it's actually going to update. If I don't need it, I don't download it.

If it's something you don't understand I would recommend downloading and installing it. If it's something you KNOW you don't need, just forget it and tell Windows Update not to offer it again. (Which is kind of a joke, because it probably will sometime in the future anyway.)

The "recommended" updates and the "hardware" updates that you scan for on the Windows Update site are totally up to you. Not necessary at all.

Just my 2 cents.

no u dont need all the updates when u update there should be a program that tells u wether the update is imprortant or not...it slows ur comp down when u load it with stuff you dont need.

i guess you need them, especially the critical updates but the question of whether they are spying on us....that's a million dollar question.
