The "solution" is suggested by the group's name -- COLONIZE! That is, free the slaves and send them away to a place of their own. It was thought that Africa might be most suitable, a place they would be comfortable. The destination ended up being LIBERIA (This was similar to what the British did in Sierra Leone.)
One of the main reasons for advocating colonization instead of integration into American society was summarized by a leader of the group, Henry Clay, who argued that because of "unconquerable prejudice resulting from their color, they never could amalgamate with the free whites of this country."
Those who sympathized with the plight of blacks in the North and West (like Clay) also advocated this solution because they recognized that SOUTHERNERS would not be willing to tolerate a large number of suddenly freed blacks living in their midst. (Actually, there was a lot of truth to that -- as the post-Civil War period showed in Southern opposition to Reconstruction and the period of "Jim Crow".)
In fact, the colonization solution continued to have supporters. Lincoln, a fan of Henry Clay, was still suggesting voluntary colonization (and compensating slave owners to encourage them to emancipate their slaves) as a solution early in1862 (though he dropped all such ideas after issuing the Emancipation Proclamation).
But BLACK leaders opposed this notion, because they regarded AMERICA as THEIR home. And about 1830 white abolitionists began to listen to them and to advocate emancipation WITHOUT colonization.
For a brief account of the society's founding (in 1816) and the financing of the first ship to Liberia see:

The complete name is The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America. Their solution to the slavery problem was to create an organization that would send free Blacks back to Africa. They sent the Blacks to the colony of Liberia (Liberty). They started in 1821 and in 1847, Liberia declared itself an indpendent nation.
