I am guilty of doing it.

There have been times were we committed to a dinner and had to leave right after it was over with.
The couple times this has happened, we had a sick little one at home and didn't want to stay away very long.
We did explain the situation either before we arrived or right after we got there.
I do know one time, we called to say we couldn't comeand explained why and they said it was fine, they just wanted us to show up and stay as long as we were able.

I have also had that happen with dinners at my house and I really don't think anything about it. I am sure there is a reason why they have to leave.

I guess it is unless the people who did it have a good excuse like someone in the hospital. But if that's they case they shouldnt be going to dinner parties in the first place. Of course it would be mroe polite to eat, interact, to stay for a while, and if you have to get going to leave but only after saying goodbye to everyonw.

Do you mean at a restaurant, at a friends house or at home?

Restaurant: Um, yeah, you kinda need to pay.. LOL

Friend's house: at least offer to help clean up, and do so if asked.

Home: same as above.

If you're THAT busy, don't accept the invitation... part of 'dinner' is the relaxing part afterwards...

Yes, unless you told the host prior to being invited that you had another important engagement that same day. But,you wanted to come by,and hope they will invite you another time, when you can hang out alittle longer.
If its a habit,it's rude!

Rudeness is not the main issue, it's the non-communication between the diners.

Yep. Why, did someone leave you after eating. Did they at least offer to pick up the tab, because if they didn't they suck!

I think so, unless the host is informed of a time that guests must leave.
