I have a bank account and the branch is quite far off from where I live because I have moved. I am not happy with their services, so I sent them an email request to close the account. When there was no response I called the customer service, but they said they wouldn't take closure requests on phone. So I sent them a signed letter. It is more than 2 months now, they are sending me monthly statements and new product features and what-not, actually behaving as if I have not sent the closure request and they are also charging maintenance fees every month. The branch is too far from where I live, so I cannot actually go in person and make a request. What shall I do?

Not taking an email or a phone call I can understand. However if you sent them a signed letter asking them to close your account, then its time to take legal action, especially if they are charging you fees.

If you have the ability to access the account via the internet, transfer the whole balance to a local bank. Ot write a check for the whole balance and open an account locally. Then send a Certified letter (so they have to sign for it) stating you have closed the account.

In some cases, and closing accounts is USUALLY one, in-person is the only form of "formal" closure a bank will accept. Is there a friend to ride with and pay gas expenses for taking you?

Do what you should have done to begin with: make sure all checks have cleared and any automatic payment authorizations have been terminated. Then send the bank a certified letter directing them to close the account.
