just wondering.
could i find a high performance barebone desktop for $350? (including all parts needed to build a working computer)
hard drive
dvd burner
graphics card
etc.

Very challenging for a first timer. 2nd build is usually interesting and 3rd build is just like a walk in the park. A bare set up with processor and RAM is capable of beeping once, displaying POST and opening BIOS menu. Some helpful guides:

If you're sure you are up to the task, google it. An answer to this could take pages. There are many good sites to assist you. I have bought and built many computers. The place I like best for a barebones unit is 3Btech.net Also look at tigerdirect.com For the best price comparison, try pricewatch.com
BTW- A barebones is a case, motherboard, CPU and fan. At some places you can also select RAM, DVD's, HDD's etc.

its very simple if you read the manuals that comes with the parts. try newegg.com for good prices on components.
