Instead of giving a thumbs-down for an inappropriate or off-topic answer, it seems that a lot of people give thumbs-down for things that go against their personal preference. That's why it shows up most in questions about theology and "favorite" anything.
It's a passive-agressive action.

I think they have nothing better to do than to go through answers and give everyone a thumbs down. Someone once gave me a thumbs down for answering "What makes you smile". Hey, if that makes them happy, whatever! I will probably get a million thumbs down for this answer too, but oh well. :)
