Why do we capitals "I" are we just that selfish?

It's a leftover from the early medieval days, when all the letters were in lower case and scrunched together. It was very hard to read that, especially considering that the few people who could read and write had bad handwriting.

So instead of getting something like this:
igotupthismorningandtendedthechickensandthenitookcareofthecowsthenicoughedbecauseoftheplagueandthenihadsomebreakfast

you'd get something more like this:
IgotupthismorningandtendedthechickensandthenItookcareofthecowsthenIcoughedbecauseoftheplagueandthenIhadsomebreakfast

See?It makes it just a little easier to read.

This is the long term accepted grammatical practice. To us a lower case "i" could be be considered an attempt to gain attention.

No. We use capitial letters when we use anybody's name so using a capital i only makes sense. It doesn't make you selfish because you say, "I ate chocolate ice cream last night." or, "I think you look really good in that shirt!" does it?
