They also avoid paying city taxes. In my hometown, they built two super walmarts within about 7 miles of each other at the same time. There was a huge debate, and they almost didnt build because they did not want to pay city taxes. They choose land that was outside city limits. City was going to anex a whole bunch of property, including the sites choosen for both walmarts.
As this was being decided on, walmart threatened to move out if the city anexed their sites. They even went as far as stopping construction until the matter was resolved. The city gave in and now there are two walmarts literally feet outside the city limits and they dont have to pay city taxes. They are paying county tax, but it is about 1/5th of what they would pay inside city limits.
So, they are in my hometown, have shut several locally owned businesses down, along with a couple of smaller chains. They have a cusomer base of everyone in the city. Both stores (this is actually a small town, not a city) are conduction business within the city, but dont have to pay the city taxes. How much money is that taking away from the city?
I try not to shop there. But, they are cheeper than target, and when on a tight budget I will do it.
Walmart started as a great chain to bring quality items to the less financially affluent. Now they are about paying out as lil as possible. They still have cheeper prices, but their products are getting crappier and crappier.

Walmart has knowingly used contractors who use illegal workers. They destroy small business and bully suppliers, which results in a great deal of outsourcing.
They pay less than fair wages, hiring predominantly part time workers as to not provide any medical.
I don't shop at walmart, however if I did I would certainly feed guilty about support what I see as on of the most despicable companies around.

Wal-Marts is doing nothing you could not accuse any chain outlet of doing. This campaign against Wal-Marts began - oh,just coincidentally - just as the war in iraq was intensifying and has obviously served only to distract liberals from opposition to the war. Same with gay marriage; a valid issue in it's own right - as is Wal-Marts - but one is struck by the timing. It too emerged full bore exactly when you would otherwise have expected an antiwar movement to have coalesced.

I hate Wal Mart . I don't shop there and I never will. They have lousy help . They should be sued for false advertising . SATISFACTION GUARANTEED in neon lights ? they don't come even close to being acceptable in basic customer satisfaction. I'd like to see Wal Mart out of business.
