Jeff is correct. 1st Buzie has it backwards. NO state requires employers to force you to join a union. Some states allow unions to prohibit the employer from hiring non-union workers. A right to work state prohibits unions from doing so.

Actually it is a state that prohibits union membership as a requirement for a job. In some states if a union is embedded in a workplace, the only way for a new employee to get a job is to join the union. In a right to work State the same worker can be hired and has the choice as to whether he/she wants to join a union or not.

I was Electrician in AZ for many years and being a right to state meant I did not need a journeyman's license to do journeyman work for journeyman pay!!! If you can't find work in AZ than you're not looking very hard, I changed jobs at will when I was there and I often found more than 1 job as soon as I left the 1 I was at!!
