i know animals do, but how about plants?

There is no evidence that plants have any kind of consciousness. Nearly all lifeforms have a genetic mechanism for death. Many flowering plants are annuals. Their normal lifecycle is to live for a season, produce seeds or bulbs as a method for reproduction, and then die. That way, the plant isn't burdened with additional mechanisms to allow it to survive a harsh winter. These deaths are triggered by environmental change, not cognition.

some might "commit suicide" by excreting a poison or chemical onto itself and kill it
