The herb feverfew has been used for headaches since at least the 17th century when Nicolas Culpeper wrote, 'It is very effectual for all pains in the head.' It had fallen into some disuse, except among professional herbalists, but has recently come back into favour - with at least two double blind clinical trials proving its effectiveness for migraines. Feverfew has been found to reduce both the frequency and the severity of migraines even when taken on its own, although most herbalists usually combine it with other herbs to improve overall effects. Sufferers should take the equivalent of 125mg of dried herb daily for at least three months. Tonics for the liver and digestive tract are central to the herbal treatment of migraines. Bitter herbs such as centaury will stimulate the digestion so that less of the offending substances reach the bloodstream. Liver herbs like dandelion root or vervain will promote the work of the liver in removing toxins. Stress is important in most cases of migraine. For these people, the calming herbs such as skullcap, wood betony, and perhaps kava kava will help to ease the tension that is promoting migraines. These should be taken throughout the week, like the feverfew, not just at the time of the headache. Other herbs are useful taken during or at the start of a migraine to reduce the pain and return the bloodvessels to a normal size. Those people who are aware of an aura before the migraine may be able to stop it coming on by using a blend of cramp bark (to quickly release blood vessel constriction), valerian (a muscle relaxant and painkiller) and feverfew. These may be taken as tablets, tinctures or teas, always following the label's instructions on dosage. Lavender essential oil should be massaged into the temples at the first sign of an attack. Once the full-blown migraine begins, valerian on its own may still be helpful, as may feverfew. Jamaican dogwood is a more powerful analgesic, specifically used for pains in the head, but as it can be toxic in large doses, it should only be used under the guidance of a professional herbalist. Peppermint essential oil or tiger balm massaged into the temples at this stage will ease the pain. The different triggers of migraines seem to work together, so it is rare to come across someone with a single cause. Therefore you will need to take a holistic approach to treatment, and if you have severe symptoms seek a consultation with a professional herbalist.

You might want to do a good detox and check for food allergies. The herb Feverfew is very good at preventing migraines. I used to get them too. I've been taking the feverfew and haven't had a migraine in over a year.

You avoid caffeine and msg; but the amino acid Tyramine is
also a big dietary factor with migranes. Although you eat "organic", you ought begin a dietary journal, and look at items that are a "staple", and investigate if they are Tyramine
linked.
With Tyramine out of the way, we need to look at how your migranes are classified, before thinking of "natural cures".
Hyperactivity of Liver Yang, would be one way, and hypertension would be a good indication of this. Thus, Shao yao wan, and/or Tian Ma Gou Tang.
Maybe the migranes are more on the "dull" side. This relates more to a blood deficiency, and Ba Zhen Tong comes to mind, as well as a change in diet to "blood building" foods, and regemins that promote circulation.
Knowing where the pain is first noticed also helps. Is it vertex, occipital, frontal? Or id it preceded by what psychology calls an overall "aura", and then "boom"?
Again, keep in mind, that just because you avoid MSG and caffeine does not mean that a congenital factor is not involved which elevates aldosterone, or maybe renin.

In Chinese medicine, headaches are typically due to some type of Liver disharmony. There are many different types of headaches in Chinese medical diagnosis and making a distinction between the multitudes of possible syndromes helps to have a successful treatment plan.
The most common Liver disharmony is Liver Qi Stagnation. The Liver is most happy when it has abundant Liver Blood flowing through it keeping it nourished and cool. The Liver is also pacified with the free and easy movement of Qi and Blood circulating throughout.
If the Liver Blood becomes deficient, or if the Blood and Qi stagnate in the Liver, the Liver begins to heat up and become agitated. As this condition becomes chronic, the Liver can strike out at other organs, such as the Heart causing insomnia, or the Large Intestine causing digestive disorders such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
As in nature, heat in the body rises. In the case of Liver Heat, the Heat can rise through the meridians (or channels) and Liver heat often rises through the Gall Bladder channel. The Liver and Gall Bladder channels are connected and the Gall Bladder channel traverses the occipital area of the skull (the base of the skull) and the head itself ending at the temples. This is why Liver Heat Rising is one of the most common diagnostic patterns for headaches in Chinese medicine.
While immediate relief can be gained by anti-inflammatory medications and other pain killers, ultimately the root of the problem, Liver Qi Stagnation, must be addressed for long term relief. In Chinese medical theory, health is not simply the absence of pain and disease, health is the complete restoration of all of the organ systems and the free flow of Qi and Blood. This can be accomplished in many ways such as acupuncture/acupressure, nourishing Tonic herbs, a healthy lifestyle and Qi Gong exercises.

Little known fact: People who suffer from chronic migraines and headaches are not going to find permanent relief with pills and eating habbits.
Go ahead right now and feel the muscles in your shoulders and neck leading right up into your scalp. I am confidant that they are very stressed and tight. THIS is your problem. I am also very sure that the muscles all along your spine right down to your coxes are also very stressed and very stiff. Probably your arms too.
What doesn't help is when a person has a migraine they tend to tense up their muscles automatically, which is really only reinforcing the problem and making it worse.
If you want PERMANENT relief it will take you time. You need to be patient, and you need to be ready to commit the time and resources. Your muscles NEED to release the accumulated tension and learn not to stay clenched or knotted up. It could realistically take you months or years depending on what you are storing in your muscles. However you should notice a difference with in the first month of treatment, less frequent occurrences or less intense.
A good PHYSIOTHERAPIST will be able to work with you to teach you good stretching techniques to use to ease the tension in the muscles; as well as manually stretch and help to realign the muscles aiding them along. She can recommend to you how often you should visit her to help the process along the best.
It would be good for you to find a MASSAGE THERAPIST as well so that she can massage you from head to toe. The massage will help to increase your circulation allowing the blood to flow through to the muscles. Massage therapy has many benefits, only 2 of which are circulation and relaxation. Make sure to tell your massage therapist that you suffer from migraines, you will know you've found the right one when she knows that your neck and scalp need to be released AS WELL AS all the other connecting muscles. If you find someone who doesn't care or just wants to work on your scalp... keep looking. You will want to see your chosen masso approx. every 2 weeks. (MORE than once a month.) The closer together your visits the faster you will see results. (I wouldn't suggest more than 1 or 2 weekly depending on how deep you are being massaged) If you wait 2 months between your visits you will never improve on yourself wheas if you go 2 weeks after your first visit your muscles will NOT have had a chance to return to their 'normal' state of tension. You will have an easier time 'teaching' your muscles how to stay in the relaxed state so that relaxed can become the 'normal' state instead.
Think of it like this: you have a pattern, you sit and sleep and walk a certain way. This way becomes set within you, and your muscles are used to being held in a certain way. In order for this to change, you need to work on your patterns and change them for the better. You need to 'teach' your muscles how it is that you want them to be, because right now all they know is how they are now from the years that they have spent like this.
Other therapists/body workers will be of benefit to you as well. Acupressure for example is another good choice. Accupressurists are difficult to come by, it uses the same points as AccuPUNCUTRE however the therapist will use her fingers instead of long needles... Sounds much better to me :) They are worth finding. Osteopath, Chiropractor... your choice.
Aside from the Physiotherapist and Massage therapist; there are things you can do to help yourself ease the pain:
Lavender is a natural anti-inflammatory. You can put a few drops of the essential oil on your hands and massage it through your scalp when you have your migrane. I like to add a drop of peppermint essential oil as well. I like the cooling effect it has, I find it numbs the pain. (Be very careful with peppermint not to get it close to your eyes. it will make your eyes tear and become uncomfortable due to the minty 'fumes' or smell of it.)
Lavender also makes a good tea.
You can take a warm bath in Epsom salts. Epsom salt is good for circulation and has detoxifying properties. That and the bath will help to relax you and could help to ease the migraine. 1 cup to your bath, about 15min bath.
~You can add to your salt: Lavender essential, Eucalyptus essential (also has anti-inflam properties, as well as detoxifying properties. this essential is a good 'over all' oil to put in your bath.)
I find cold compresses on my forehead helps with headach/migrane pain. It's not the same for everyone, but it doesn't hurt to try.
I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope all of my info helps you in some way!!
