The Sphinx is a huge statue outside Cairo in the area called Giza. It is in the area with the three large pyramids most familiar to Americans. Much about it is still a mystery, but it used to have a limestone face, which through wars, erosion and pollution has been obliterated. I got to ride through the pyramids and past the Sphinx on a camel--very cool experience!

It's said to have been built in the 3rd millennium B.C, but a lot of the facts are unknown. The Egyptians believe that it resembles king Khafra one of the sons of king Khufu.
