To check the popularity of a name (in America) visit these two websites. Any name that ranks fewer than 20,000 people or above the 200th percentile qualifies as rare in my book. If you want unique, you'll need to create a new name, or come up with a very unusual spelling.

Get a few baby book names and sit down with you woman and read them out.
I went through the same thing, everyone has named their childs the top 5 names and that is definately not what we were rolling with. So we read out names each not and determined which ones we liked or not, without reaching for any popular name list or etc.

I would say Nala. That name is an African name and it means Lucky. It sounds like a nice name. Another name is Kiera. It's African and American, but I don't know what it means!!!!
