The -ar ending of the verb means "to..." whatever the verb is. For instance, cantar means "to sing." Any time you need to say "to sing" in Spanish, you would use the word "cantar."

Prefiero cantar. (I prefer to sing.)
Me gusta cantar. (I like to sing.)
Quiero cantar. (I want to sing.)

If you want to say something other than "TO sing" you will need to change the verb, depending on who the subject is.

If you want to say, "I sing" then you need to change that -ar to an -o. Canto.

Who your subject is will determine what kind of ending it has.
