Ok, you didn't just "find something you shouldn't have," you stole something.
Of course it's wrong, of course you could get charged and fired, and of course you should return it.
Honestly...

who's desk did you find it in? and if it is not your desk i hope for the other person's sake you get busted cuz that would absolutely peeve me if someone else not only went through MY stuff but then also TOOK my stuff. If you work for a big company like you say, and they do catch you... you WILL get fired, it WILL go on your employment record, and when you apply for another job and put previous job down, they WILL call and find out why you got fired - for stealing. NO company wants to hire a theif.
Bring it back tomorrow, put it back into the desk, and hope no one becomes the wiser that you are the kind of person who would STEAL someone else's stuff. AND you did it during the holiday season when its about giving, not taking.
If that was your ipod, how would you feel? Well, you just made someone else feel that way.... GOOD JOB!!! (rolls eyes)

You took something that you shouldn't have. Put it back where you got it. If they saw that on the tapes yes you will be fired, If they decide to they can charge you.

Yeah, you stole it. You didn't find something you shouldn't have. You STOLE. Bring it back. It might be too late, maybe they have already looked at the cameras to see who took it. If they have done that, they'll see it's you, and you may have a criminal record.

I agree with Ella; you can be honet and risk getting fired or you can be honest and the manager can still keep you for your honesty. You cannot be a mind reader so just do what you think is best.

You should give it to your HR manager and say "i'm sorry i saw this on a desk and didn't know who it belonged to. If you know or if someone comes looking for it, here it is and let them know i'm sorry."
As long as you return it and your HR manager is understanding, no charges should be pressed.

Return it to your boss. Say, "hey I found this IPod and didn't want to risk it getting stolen so I removed it. Can you put up a sign?" and hand it over
