I'm going to have to say Thomas Paine. Paine WAS the first popular AMERICAN author. His pamphlets drove people to support Independence, and later to believe in the fight, and not loose hope in the Revolutionary War.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the early American writers of fiction. James Fennimore Cooper was another.
