I think it depends on the type of paper and size of paper you are folding. I tried doing this with a standard, medium-weight copier paper sheet, and I got to fold six; however, if I took a big sheet of bulletin board paper, I definitely fold it more than seven times.

Yes it can. The MythBusters busted this myth.

And I disagree with KennyB. The MythBusters did not use a steamtroller until after the 8th fold (maybe at the 9th or 10th fold). And they went to the 11th fold.

Anyway, it didn't matter whether you use a steamroller or not, there still is a limit. The myth said the limit was 7, now the limit is 11. The fact is that you cannot fold a sheet of paper (no matter how thin or how large) an infinite number of times.

Yes it is 100% positively true that you cannot fold a piece of paper more than 7 times. Believe it or not there has actually been lab tests done to this matter. The piece of paper must be dry however, you can fold a piece of wet paper more than 7 times. Hope this helps.

I did today.
I started with a very thin sheet that is a bit bigger than A 3.
I got to 8, with a bit of space that would allow a 9th if I used tools.
But that was the real end.

Not a standard size of paper, no. 6 is the most. Mythbusters proved it.
