It took me about 3 - 4 months. I took a course in school and practiced with my parents. Even when I got my license, I still really didn't know how to drive; I got into an accident and almost totalled my car a couple of weeks after I got my license. I think that for me, it took a good year or two to really learn how to drive - to be careful - to estimate traffic - to avoid tough situations. I've been driving for close to 20 years now, and I still learn new things about driving.

Depends how old are you and are you talking about learning all of the signs and everything. I started driving legally when I was 16 and I got my juniors that year and now i'm 17 and i haven't ever gotten a ticket. It's all about practice. I only had to take the road test once too. I'm almost 18 also.

My answer is similar to Solace as far as an automatic transmission goes. However, it took me one week to learn how to drive a stick shift. I decided since I couldn't pick it up from others, I would buy a stick shift, and drive it straight off the lot.

I learned how to drive stick in a dream, but automatic,as soon as I was in the drivers seat I was driving. It took me three times to get my permit though because I refused to read the little book, but that's besides the point.

Technically, you never stop learning, because every day builds your experience, and you learn from those experiences.
But to become proficient enough to be licensed, about 6 months to a year.

welp, i'll tell ya, it all depends on your teacher. for automatic, i learned in a required driving course over one summer at the age of 16, and it was rough going at first but turned out fine. for a stick, i never could learn as long as my mom was teaching me, but as soon as my stepdad took me out, i learned in ONE DAY.

I learned quick on my own, maybe about a week or two. I couldn't learn with my mom and dad yelling at me.

Only about 3 days, but then about 1.5 years to get comfortable behind the wheel.

i watched my dad drive all the time growing up.....so it was really easy...probably not more than a day (ford clubwagons tend to be a little tricky to drive)
