is there any way to phrase the cup half full/ half empty thing so that it is neither optimistic or pessimistic? its always bugged me

Quite.

The problem is that you are relating the contents to one of two different states: the full state or the empty state. It SEEMS like you only have two choices. But a dichotomy of this nature always has FOUR. Instead of choosing one state or the other, you can choose both or neither.

BOTH: It contains equal amounts of fullness and emptiness.
NEITHER: There is something in the glass.

I think it is half empty because originally before u filled it ,the cup was totally empty.
Every thing is basically an addition nothing could have existed from the beginning.
besides, it is safer to be pessimistic.

You can say the cup has half the amount of liquid that it can hold.

Yes. I've repeated this often.
" it doesn't matter ...what is in the container; will it quench your thirst or not? If it does then what does it matter how much is in the glass? If it doesn't quench your thirst then go refill it to what ever level you want or need!".
