4(2x + 5) = - 36
2x + 5 = - 9
2x = - 14
x = - 7

implifying
-25 + 4(2x + 5) = -61

Reorder the terms:
-25 + 4(5 + 2x) = -61
-25 + (5 * 4 + 2x * 4) = -61
-25 + (20 + 8x) = -61

Combine like terms: -25 + 20 = -5
-5 + 8x = -61

Solving
-5 + 8x = -61

Solving for variable 'x'.

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '5' to each side of the equation.
-5 + 5 + 8x = -61 + 5

Combine like terms: -5 + 5 = 0
0 + 8x = -61 + 5
8x = -61 + 5

Combine like terms: -61 + 5 = -56
8x = -56

Divide each side by '8'.
x = -7

Simplifying
x = -7

2007-12-13 10:37:42 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Step 1:-25+4(2x+5)= - 61

Step 2: -25+25+4(2x+5)=-61+25

Step 3: 4(2x+5)=-36 {the 25s cancel each other out}

Step 4: 8x+20=-36

Step 5: 8x+20-20=-36-20

Step 6: 8x=-56 {divide each side by 8}

Step 7: x=-7

Isnt it funny how we all did it different ways but we all came up with the same answer? proof that math isnt an exact science

you have to expand the stuff in the brackets first:
4(2x + 5) = 8X + 20
and then combine like terms -- move all the constants to the Right Hand Side and leave the variable (8x) on the left:
8x = -61 + 25 - 20
8x = -56
x = -7

2007-12-13 10:38:30 · answer #5 · answered by Lady Lefty 3 · 0 0

-25 + 4(2x+5) = -61

add 25 to both sides

4(2x+5) = -36

divide both sides by 4

2x+5 = -9

subtract 5 from both sides

2x = -14

divide both sides by 2

x = -7

ta-da!
