Do you hate to make Mid-Term Exams? They are so long... I just made my exams (Chemistry= 100 question) (Physics= 75 question). I started them at 3:30 and just now finished at 6:30.

What do you think?

Yeah, the time-consuming aspect of it sucks BUT at least you can trust the tests you've made because you know what you've covered.

My colleagues and I worked together making our mid-term exams. We all constructed 1 page of the 3 page exam and then shared with each other, making any revisions we thought were needed.

A) Research clearly indicates that teacher-made tests are among the worst types of assessments possible, as they are wildly inaccurate (unreliable), often unfair, and many times they do not actually test what it is they are supposed to (invalid). You might be a great teacher, but my guess is that your tests do not fall outside the curve of badness.

B) Why does a test have to be so long? To make you feel good? To make students suffer? Can you honestly say that you have to have a 100 question test, at mid-term, to see whether or not your students have actually learned the material? Do you not do on-going assessments throughout the semester? Rather than punish yourself (and your students) like this, why not give them a mid-term that they could look forward to - like a project or a lab activity that helps them synthesize the major objectives you've covered?

Three hours for two exams? I've spent that much time on one English exam. Just make sure you save your exams for next year.

***RP: Many school systems require certain types and numbers of questions on tests and exams. Teachers don't always have the luxury of deciding what kind of tests they will give.
