It depends do you have and automatic,if so the shims are placed between the block and the starter and this depends on the year model early model blocks had bolt holes for the starter that were side by side later model had bolt holes that were off set,shims are available for both,if you have a standard transmission they do make shims but in some cases it is not shims you need but the correct starter bendix as they made two different ones with different tooth counts on the Bendix or also called the starter drive,and early model standard trans. the starter bolts to the bell housing and on later model they bolt up like an automatic.

Between the starter and the mounting bracket. the shim should have 1 full hole and one half hole that leads to the out side. If you don't have one that looks like that. you got the wrong one.
