You should be fine as long as the URL begins with https. When you see the 's' in the URL, encryption should be invoked. I do not always see the lock, but I rely on the URL.

You'll probably be issued with a Solo Debit Card which can be used online providing the websites you're buying from accept that method of payment. At your age the bank will not allow you to spend more than what you've got in your account so if you've only got £50 in your account and you want to buy something costing £60 the payment will be declined. This is just a protection measure to stop young people from getting into too much debt.

There are typically "secure" areas and unsecure areas of any shopping site. The merchandise would typically be in unsecured areas because if you are shopping you aren't transmitting personal data or credit card numbers.

So then, you can surmise that when you hit the "Check Out Now" button, you go to a secure area which should display the lock icon. This is where you enter sensitive data and the security protects that.

It does not need to remain the whole session. Usually it appears when logging in, or actually checking out (buying things, etc). It only needs encryption when sensitive data such as passwords, bank details, etc are being used.
