I'm a psych major in college, my personal favorite conformity example is Asch's Line Experiment. Basically the researcher had one person who had volunteered to do his study and allowed that person to believe that the other few people in the room were volunteers too. These other people were actually working for the experimenter. Asch showed the people a series of lines and asked which one was the longest. Everyone said line B was longest even though line A was clearly bigger. When it came time for the volunteer to say which line he considered the longest, most of the time the volunteer would choose the same line as everyone else, even though he knew it wasnt true. This experiment was repeated several times. Look it up on Wikipedia. It's really quite cool! Hope that helps!

This isn't an answer to your Q, but it triggered off my rebellious response to conformity!!! I grew up in the Great Depression; was a young woman in the early '50's when young women were expected to become homemakers; mothers; cook and run a clutter-free home. I was a rebel--did marry at 22, due to sex, but went my own way--childless until I was 39 and then did get to adopt; borrowed and went to college for degrees every 10 yrs.; got an MA in Guidance and Counceling and clinical training and worked with very troubled adolescents for 21 yrs. Adopted a beautiful baby (now a fantastic 39-yr old woman). I grieve "retirement" from the work I loved; but INSIST that there is more to learn and do! I've never been a "home-maker"; don't like to cook and have not ever fulfilled a "female-role?!

Doing something that you do not want to do because other people are doing it or you feel expected to do it is comformity.

Doing something you want to do although it may be unpopular is non-conformity.
