I have tried this in the past, and found it won't work. The arbor coming out of the drill motor is sized differently for 1/2 and 3/8 drill motors.

Probably. The drill motor, may not have enough power to drive the drill bit well though, and may burn out the drill prematurely. Also the threaded shaft that the chuck is on may be a different diameter, which will prevent them from being interchangeable. To change the chuck, first you must open the chuck and remove the screw in the back end - the threads will be left hand threads - the reverse of any ordinary screw. then, using the chuck key, strike it with a hammer in order to turn in the chuck and break it loose from the threaded spindle. Once it is loose, you can unscrew it from the shaft. Installation is the reverse of removal.n There are replacement chucks available at most home centers, and the instructions are printed on the package if you need more or clearer instructions.

The shaft threads are standard and will permit either chuck to be attached. However just because you have a half inch chuck on a 3/8 drill it does not mean that you have enough power to drill through steel with a half-inch bit.

Yes, the chucks can often be switched out.

Open the chuck jaws all the way out. You should find a screw down inside there, it may be a phillips head or allen head. Normally these will tighten to the left and loosen to the right... just the opposite of a normal screw or bolt. Remove that screw, and the chuck should slide right off, and you can replace it with another.
