If I knew what a "dot diagram" was, I would help. Does this mean trying to draw the crystal lattice, or electron valence shells?

Platinum has 10 valence electrons, and a highest oxidation number of 6.

Its compounds need to be treated by molecular orbital (ligand field) theory; Dot diagrams won't do.

Refer your teacher to any college inorganic text. If he won't believe you, quote me and say that I have published papers on platinum chemistry.

aput down 'Pt' and draw one dot somewhere next to it

im assuming you mean the Lewis structure. theres one dot because platinum has one valence electron
