12 (x+3) - 3x = 117
12x + 36 - 3x = 117
9x + 36 = 117
9x = 81
x = 9

Add 3x to both sides to make it
12(x+3)=117+3x
The left can now be rewritten as
12x + 36 = 117+3x
Subtract 36 from both sides and we get
12x = 81 +3x
Divide both sides by 3 and you get
4x = 27 + x
Divide by x and the equation becomes
4 = 27/x +1
Subtract 1 and it becomes
3 = 27/x which can be written as 3/1 = 27/x
You can now solve x by using cross multiplication
27 x 1 = 27. 27/3 = 9
Therefore x equals 9
its been a while since I've done one of these so there might be a more streamlined way to solve it, but I just checked and x is definetly 9.
Edit: Just looked at the others and I def threw too many extra steps in. Oh well, been a while :)

u multiply 12 by x and multiply 12 by 3
then u add 3x becuz 2 negatives become a positive
so in the end u have 12x+36+3x=117 so u simplify it by adding the x's
15x+36=117..then u subtract 36 from 117....and divide by 36
then u get ur answer

first you need to find the product of that first part
12(x + 3) is also 12x + 36
make sense?
so...
12x + 36 - 3x = 117
then subtract your x's
9x + 36 = 117
subtract 36 from both sides
9x = 81
divide both sides by 9
x = 9
