I have a Jeep Cherokee. My car wont start or even pretend to start, unless I really jerk on the gear shifter, But lately its been being testy with that, and now sometimes it wont start at all. what could be causing this? It's not my starter.

If it is an auto transmission, then it is your neutral safety switch is either faulty, or misadjusted. If it is a manual, then I'm not too sure what the problem is.

good luck.

there's a protection swap that forestalls commencing in something yet Park or unbiased. there is cutouts in a toothed plate that slides in the time of a spring-loaded swap it relatively is "often open". in basic terms whilst the shifter and this plate are interior the right place in unbiased or Park will the button be closed and the starter solenoid allowed to get capability. it relatively is a relatively uncomplicated activity to swap this. The swap is maximum possibly on a bracket with slotted holes. Years of use has led to a variety of of of the climate to positioned on and/or pass. The swap place (relative to the toothed plate) could be adjusted so as which you get a sturdy swap closure each time, whether the shifter is somewhat unfastened.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch. try starting it in neutral instead of park. this may help sometimes. but be careful the car doesn't roll on you.

There is a sensor that tells your car that its o.k. to start. ie if its in neutral. my best bet is to tell a mechanic.
