Sorry if I'm insulting your intelligence, as you've obviously done some research, but have you done a test-run of different types of scopes?

Catadioptrics are excellent if they're good quality, but aperture is particularly important, too. Not that small apertures aren't good for what they're used for, and they are versatile in that they can be used for photography if on a sturdy mount. And not saying that 5 inches is "small", either. For viewing of deep sky objects, though, you'd want a bigger aperture scope, which may mean going to a Dobsonian mount for the same money.

Anyway, my suggestion, if you haven't already done so, is to go to a club or star party and see what your eyes can see through different scopes, and then decide.

Hi. First answer is correct. I have an unusual Schmidt-Netwonian so I have a liking for Schmidt corrector plate based scopes. But the Maksutovs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maksutov_telescope are also capable of great images. The best scope is the one you use, so find the easiest for you.
