Stick with something not too personal. After all it is your boss. Go with something for travel. Target has tons of travel stuff. New TSA locks, more little bottles for liquids. Electronic stuff is always great.
If you have a Brookstone near you, go look there for ideas. World Market is also fabulous as it's got lots of European things, like candy and chocolate from around the world. A nice corkscrew.
Best Buy. All men like things from Best Buy.
I love specialty coffee. You can always use a nice coffee set in the office. I got my boss a new coffee mug. He likes the really big ones so we got him a very manly looking one with a bear claw on it.
Office art is good too. A Monet print framed, or a collage that he can fill in with pictures of his family but doesn't take much to hang up in the office.
If you know of any hobbies, a gift card for his hobby is another safe option. For example, if you know he fishes consider a gift card to a local fishing store. A gift card for him and his wife to go out to dinner is another gift.
Just avoid anything thats too personal. After all, you don't want him to think you see him as more than a boss.

I have been given my boss a nail reducing set final 3 hundred and sixty 5 days because of the fact he did no longer have one and replaced into consistently utilising different products to repair hold close nails, and so on. He enjoyed it! I often get him and his spouse something consumable. considering that my boss is the same style of guy as your boss, the consumable present is often something incredibly healthful...nuts, fruit, coffee or tea...that are all issues they prefer.

Does he bring his own coffee in from anywhere but home. Maybe get him a gift card from the place if it isn't done at the office or brought in from home.

be creative. give him something with a little personal touch like bake his fav cake and design it according to his personality, then wrap it your own but not using already made wrappers or boxes etc... , a personalize gift is much more appreciated because of creativity and artistic approach you have applied unto it....
