When do you use endnotes and when do you use footnotes?

i know to credit the author...and all the obvious...but when would i use a footnote over an endnote?

Your professor may have a preference -- I use footnotes if there are only a few and endnotes if there are a lot (they are just too messy on the page, I feel). But your prof/school's policy first.
