I am buying a new Hard drive for my laptop. Why should I buy a 5400 PRM over a 4200? How can I tell what one I have in my laptop now? and How do I know if its a SATA hard driver or not?

Hi. The faster the disk spins the faster the data can be transfered. SATA drives use a thin cable.

It's a game of speed against cost. 5400 RPM is good and 7200 is better. Of course you pay more for speed.

Also, a slower hard drive for the same cost can have more capacity.

If you have a high end CPU and lots of memory, you need to match it with a high speed hard drive.

Else, a slower one will suffice all practical purposes.

Imagine driving an AMG Mercedes-Benz on a single lane country road with lots of pot holes.

Take care.
