For crissake stay away from Fisherman's Wharf. There haven't been any fishermen there for years, it's just touristy shops selling tee-shirts and coffee mugs with your name on them.

Chinatown is great, though. Grant Ave. has shops with everything from cheap touristy stuff to amazing, expensive works of art. North Beach has wonderful Italian restaurants. Union Square is the traditional shopping/hotel district. They are all cheek-by-jowl, so if you can walk a mile you can go from Union Square, all the way down Grant Avenue, to Broadway (North Beach). In fact it's one of my favorite walks.

If you're in Golden Gate Park, there's a great thing in the new art museum (the De Young Museum). They have a tower that you can go up and see a great 360-degree view of the city. You don't have to pay admission to the museum.

The GG Bridge is beautiful, a sight that will stay with you. Just to the east of the south end of the bridge (the San Francisco end) is an old Civil War fort called Fort Point. Besides being interesting in its own right, you get a great view of the bridge from there. It is actually -under- the bridge.

There are other neighborhoods with their own character. The Mission District is very international and funky. Haight Street is . . . well, interesting. Any good tour book will give you ideas.

SF has great public transportation. The Cable Cars are more of a theme park ride, but there are busses and trolleys that will take you anywhere. Many people I know there don't even have cars.

San Francisco has some very expensive hotels, and some nice boutique hotels. I recommend Galleria Park, the Monticello, the Triton - all are downtown and you can get everywhere from there.

To do:
Walk the path along the Bay from Fort Point
Stroll North Beach (Columbus Ave.) and eat there!
Get tickets for Beach Blanket Babylon
Ride the Ferry to Sausalito, walk around, and ferry back
Alcatraz is very interesting/recommended
China Town - quick walk through only (North Beach is better)
Go to Yerba Buena at Fisherman's Wharf for an Irish Coffee!

It looks like folks have already given you a great list of attractions to visit. In terms of areas to stay, I would recommend the Union Square Area which puts you walking distance to shopping and plenty of restaurants. Otherwise, you can stay near Fisherman's Wharf area which is close to the pier and restaurants. I've heard very good things about the Chancellor Hotel in the Union Square Area.

sf is always a little on the chilly side-- bring clothes u can layer b/c the weather isnt predictable ( i lived there for 9 years) be sure to hit fisherman's wharf, the cable car, the stadium, alcatraz, golden gate, and union square

this city is hilly and is mostly designed for walking, be sure to pack your walking shoes, as well as your fancy shoes for when u hit the fancy restaurants

my personal favorite resterants are bucca de beppo andthe rainforest cafe

have fun!

My favorite is a sunset walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Bundle up this time of year, but it's worth it. Check the SF MUNI site for bus routes all over the city.
