Antidepressants take the edge off depression, allowing the person to function & reestablish goals. I would also suggest an exercise program...walking, hiking, dancing, swimming...something the person enjoys doing...even having a volunteer job...to keeps thoughts externally focused...
this would help too.

Depression, eventually, it takes time to work...Different antidepressants work for some people..doctor usually changes, until they get the one that will stop those tears that are always there.

primarily it allows you to think clearly, instead of being stuck in a loop of sadness.
