Like I have this professor, who is the same sex as me, and we can go out for a coffee, but not for a glass of wine or beer.

And I am of age, 22

Those policies (not laws) came about because of sexual harassment and other concerns--it's just not a good idea. I was an "older" student and had lunch with professors, but never had a "drink" until after I left the institution.

Don't put the professor in an ethical dilemma, even if he/she offers.

A politics professor where I did my undergrad once lamented "you can sleep with her but don't think about buying her a beer..."

Reality, either would cause a problem but it's not a law. More and more colleges have developed policies that further separate faculty and students socially because of complaints and lawsuits over the years.

Some seem to think it has to do with the way our society has steadily increased the age of perceived adulthood such that these days most people refer to college students as "kids" and their parents remain involved in their daily lives.

Sort of a shame, isn't it?

I agree, it is not illegal, just against school policy OR your professor's better judgment. As an undergrad, we used to have dinners all the time with profs and would have wine/beer.

It's probably not illegal, but instead is against the rules of your particular college.
