Your average Black Bear weighs 250-300 pounds, now your average African Lion weighs 390-420 pounds.
A Black Bear would indeed try to wrestle the Lion to the ground, that is there fighting style, they don't use there paws as much to fight as there larger cousin the Grizzly. A Black Bear is not stronger then an African Lion, a fairly large individual would be not on average, Bears are indeed stronger then cats relatively, however this strength is confused with bones, Bears have much much harder bones then cats, in fact it is thought to be as hard as a rhino's but the muscle fibers aren't too different and Bears do have the advantage by significant amount in forequarter strength, but a Lion at a 80-90 pound weight advantage then a Bear is stronger especially the Black Bear which does not have the the shoulder hump that is carried by all Brown Bears. And then the psychological part comes in too play: It was once thought that Grizzly and Black Bear interaction was very limited but very very recent evidence suggest otherwise including four dead Black Bear carcasses which happened in a very limited amount of time where all proven to be killed by Grizzlys, and since Black Bears are known to stay away from humans they are a very shy animal and if encountered a Lion would likely retreat. Now even the Spaniards of California once pitted a Mountain Lion against a Black Bear where the Mountain Lion killed the Bear. The Black Bear however does have strong claws which are used to hook into tree's that could cause a harsh wounds to a Lion and powerful jaws making them a fairly formidable foe but a Lion has the agility, confidence, bite force, and speed to defeat a Black Bear.
so probably the lion

Lions are much stronger and bigger with weights of over 1000lbs. A house cat can whip up on a dog twice its size and Lions are twice as big as black bears so consider that and its no contest, thats why they don't have bears in Africa, the lions ate them.

Check the average weight of each. I would guess that lions might be stronger because they probably weigh more, but it is just that, a guess.

tossup, a very large black bear , say five or six hundred pounds could give a four hundred pound lion a rough time.

The Strength of the Animal is in the MIND; depending on the circumstances involved...Pain, Hunger or Anger!
Don't bet on either to lose, it's an even Match depending on their past histories.
